In 1919, our founder Roy Allen set up a roadside drink stand in Lodi, California to introduce a new beverage called "root beer" at a parade honoring returning World War I veterans. With his creation an instant success, Allen and partner Frank Wright named the beverage we know today as A&W® Root Beer. Allen and Wright started franchising roadside stands, making A&W Restaurants the oldest franchise restaurant chain in the country.

A&W still serves top-quality products and has something for everyone. Frosty mugs of Root Beer made fresh in the restaurants, 100% U.S. Beef Burgers, and Wisconsin White Cheddar Cheese Curds are a few favorites.
Our test kitchen is located on-site at our headquarters in Lexington, Kentucky. This allows our team the ability to develop and refine new products like our Hand-Breaded Chicken Tenders which launched in 2012.

Local store marketing is not just a catchphrase around the A&W family, but a way of life. Each restaurant is unique, and will have a marketing plan tailored to fit it. We understand that there is no one-size-fits-all approach.
The A&W Marketing Team and each restaurant's Franchise Growth Leader work one-on-one with Franchise Partners to help develop a marketing strategy, budget, and implementation tactics.
At A&W we know that no two restaurants projects are the same. Our approach to each new restaurant project is based on your individual needs.
Recommended square footage is between 1,500 and 2,000 square feet, and as an A&W Franchise Partner, you'll have access to prototypical interior and exterior plans and artwork that can be customized to fit your new restaurant.
We also provide direction on prototypical equipment, seating, lighting, materials and finishes that can be tailored to specific sites.
Our team will work directly with your architect to develop the best possible layout for each location.

A&W has the unique position of being able to leverage the power of combined purchasing through Restaurant Supply Chain Solutions, RSCS, a world-class purchasing cooperative and expert in supplier-relationship management and evolving strategic processes.
In partnership with many of the world's largest restaurant chains, RSCS negotiates pricing for over 22,000 products. This includes food, packaging, equipment and smallwares in support of multiple restaurant brands.
Our philosophy at A&W is simple - have fun and make money! Our restaurant support service programs are designed with this in mind.
Whether it is our concise easy-to-use sales event training guides, food cost worksheets, or instructional videos, all of our programs are designed with an operator friendly approach.
When you open a new restaurant with A&W, you can count on us to be there with opening operations and training support.
A project manager will be assigned to your opening and be the one point of contact at A&W to guide you through the process from the day you sign your contract to the day you open your restaurant for business.
You'll have access to both classroom and in-restaurant training and our Restaurant Support Services Field Trainers will come to your restaurant to support your opening.
