I came here expecting a typical fast food restaurant and was very pleasantly surprised. The woman behind the counter was one of the nicest people I have ever met! Service was quick, the food was great, and the root beer floats are outstanding!

Hometown Goodness since 1919

It all started in 1919, Roy W. Allen opened his first Root Beer stand in Lodi, California celebrating the homecoming of local World War 1 heroes.

1919

Roy Allen partnered with Frank Wright to coin the A&W name and further expand the business.

1922

Sacramento become the site of the first A&W drive-in creating the nation's first system of franchise roadside restaurants.

1923

Business is boomin' as A&W goes international with stores opening in Winnipeg and Montreal, Canada.

1950

In 1963, Dale Mulder served the worlds first Bacon Cheeseburger from a chain. Legendary.

1963

Expansion continues as A&W heads east with location opening in the Philippines, Malaysia and Okinawa, Japan

1963

No longer limited to the restaurants, A&W Root Beer becomes available in bottles and cans.

1971

A&W® All American Food continues to be enjoyed all over the world with over 1,200 restaurants, including 350 international stores and 10 countries and territories.

2011

A&W® Root Beer is made fresh in-store from real cane sugar and a proprietary blend of herbs, bark, spices and berries. *At participating locations.

Rooty the great root bear was born on June 19. No one is sure quite how old Rooty is...a bear never tell!
